Casualties resulting from the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) spiked in early 2012 according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO).
According to an August report,  JIEDDO found that IED casualties around the world peaked at almost 600 killed and approximately 1,800 wounded in May 2012.  Casualties had significantly dropped by August, but were again on the rise.
